A Bit Darker Card

I watched the Harry Potter Marathon this weekend and decided to check out the Haunted Design House Challenge. The current challenge is skulls. I have used all my skull images a few too many times so I went looking for a cool new one. I ran across this really great site called Aurora Wings. The images range from totally cute to really scary and they are really amazing! I bought an image called Santa Muerte - Day of the Dead Catrina Skull. This is what it said about the image: "this is a beautiful line art with wonderful flow and movement, full of details that will make coloring this quite a challenge. This is a line art best suited for advanced colorists or colorists with patience." I am not an advanced colorist and I have no patience with coloring. In fact, lately I have been just dragging my images through some ink and calling it done. But something about this image just made me want to buy it and try to color it. I didn't do it justice, but I am going to keep trying until I get it right! In fact, you would laugh if you saw how I colored this. I dipped a little paint brush pen in Tim Holtz stamp pads and dotted it on. Then I used some fine line Copics to darken up a few spots. Scary I know!

I am also entering this in the Aurora Wings Challenge - their first one! The challenge is anything goes so I am going to include this in that challenge as well.

  1. I'm really happy to have you stumble onto my shop, Nancy. I love your unique coloring approach - it looks great here - and the traditional Day of the Dead colors of orange and yellow with black. Thank you so much for joining our very first challenge at Aurora Wings with your creation. Best wishes! Mitzi

  3. Yay! So happy to have you back playing in the dungeon again! Welcome to the world of Aurora Wings, too! I think you did a smashing job of coloring up this beauty! I am getting ready to try my hand at coloring her, and was thinking that less is more with this gal. So much detail, but quite stunning in monotones. I love what you did, here!! Let me know if she needs a home...

  11. Are you saying this was a happy accident....well I think the coloring looks amazing. How beautiful it looks-I am loving it. I just heard that one of my childhood friends will be getting married. She has lived with her parents all this time and is taking care of them now. And guess what, she is getting married on Halloween and wants a skull cake with "To Death Do Us Part" written on it. How cool is that. She always loved Halloween. Pssst, if you look on my pin board titled "Halloween Wedding" you will see the cake. I want the challenge of making her a Halloween Wedding mini album and am pinning ideas for it there.....lol

  14. OMGosh your coloring looks so fabulous for dragging a little color and then deepening with copics, lol. I would have guessed you spent several hours. Love the great design and the flowers. I saw a special on "the day of the dead" on TV and it's really quite a holiday and big deal in Mexico.

Some Penguins

Today kicks off the newest Pattie's Creations Challenge which is Tags . Just Tags. No cards with Tags on or in them - just tags. I love to make just tags so this one was right up my alley. I used the super cute Penguin image from Pattie's Creations, but I couldn't stop at just one so I made a little penguin family. My tag is made from an old cardboard box top which I peeled down, painted, distressed a bit, and then added some snow medium. My bow is actually a new bow designed by Pamela Lehto (available at Squigglefly tomorrow). Please join us in the Pattie's Creations Tag Challenge - there are lovely DT tags for inspiration and Pattie gives away wonderful prizes! Hugz!

Language Plays, Billiard Balls, and Some "Interesting" Wine

I always look forward to the new **Art*Journal*Journey* Theme each month. The May theme was chosen by Elle and she chose Language as the theme. So many cool things you can do with that theme.  This weekend I chose to do the Language(s) of God in my Journaling Bible.  When I started, I was going to do Fasting as a way of speaking to God but after listening to a Sermon on Fasting, I realized that was more complicated and I would have to study it more first. So I switched gears midstream and just did some of ways that God speaks to us and vice versa.  There are many more, but I put the ones I could think of quickly here.   The papers are from an old hymnal and Close to My Heart (CTMH).  The gnome is CTMH as well.  Now I have played with all the gnomes in the set,and I totally love them. While looking for the hymnal paper, I ran across an old song book that I was saving.  It was damaged so I knew it would have to be recycled into something....

A Covered Bridge, a Shotgun Wedding, Patton Wisdom, and Some Art

On our recent vaction, hubby and I got back to our historical marker seeking.  This time we visited the Clarkson Covered Bridge. It is super long and very cool.  We also found a website HERE that has a mapped out tour of Alabama where you can visit 7 in one day - a fun trip for a Fall weekend.  This is the only picture I took of the bridge. The day before, we visited the Patton Musuem at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and viewed Ft. Knox from as close as they will let you get. They say there is still a ton of gold in Ft. Knox - trillions of dollars worth.  We liked the Patton Museum.  I don't agree with most of Patton's management style, but do respect that he accomplished much.  I was impressed with some of his leadership statements like this one which I totally agree with: They have some fabulous items at the museum - hubby could have looked for hours and hours if I had let him. They have planes, tanks, and other vehicles there too so you can see exactly what ...
