I went to see Black Nativity with my daughters a few weekends ago and discovered Langston Hughes. I have now read many of his poems and I love A Dream Deferred:
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
I like how visual he wrote, and for some reason, I have been thinking about all the meanings behind this poem. We all defer dreams. I have a ton of deferred dreams in the back of my mind, and a bunch of my deferred dreams have already exploded. This poem has inspired a few card ideas in the back of my mind and here is one:

I used the Sketch from Seems A Little Sketchy #54, computer generated my sentiment (a poem by Mark Twain) and used a ship from Squigglefly artist, Graham Gamble, called Tall Ship. I received this image free because for every $15 you spend at Squigglefly, you get one image of your choice (a set even) free - so you really get a 20% discount on everything you buy. I am also entering this in the last Squigglefly challenge of the year (we are all taking a little Christmas break) which is to add a touch of red to your card. It is our team's week off but I couldn't resist - especially since it is the last one of the year!

Nancy both of your cards are amazing. I really love the quotation you used with the Tall Ship image, and not only the quotation itself but the way you created it with the different fonts and the arrow. Very powerful! Your cupcake card is just too cute - great texture to it! Have a Merry Christmas!

ReplyDeleteExploding dreams??? Now that sounds scary more like a nightmare. I would hope the dreams just sag-like your body does when you get older. The older the dream the more it sags.....lol That way the dream never dies-you can always give it a workout to bring it back if need be. Love the first card's message and image. Sail away from your safe harbor--that's definitely food for thought if you are wanting to pursue your dreams. The buttons on the cupcake card are so darn cute. I just love that design feature!
