A Haunted Furnace, Fun Art, a T-Day Drink, and some Very Cool ATCs

Isn't it fun when you find unexpected things?

My daughter and I visited Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, Alabama this past weekend.  It is supposed to be the most haunted place in Alabama so you know I wanted to go.  Allie just went because she wanted to go to Pepper Market.  Since Sloss was 2 minutes away, she could not say no plus I was driving - lol.  When we entered the visitor's center, this sculpute is the first thing I noticed.  I knew my T-day and Coffee & Tea loving friends would enjoy it. Notice the sheep in wolves clothing  sculpture in the background.  Lots of cool metal art at the visitors center.  Definitely worth the trip.

Here is part of the story of the site and a few other pictures.

We did the self-guided tour imagining how hot this place was and how many people died making iron or from the toll it took on them.   When we walked around, we didn't feel anything spooky but it was the middle of the day and there were a lot of people there.

There was a spot toward the end of the property with a deep well and some places where you could see into one of the furnaces.  We did get a bit of a spooky feel there, but then we were talking about how you could have hid a body in those furnaces and no one would ever know.  If you want to read a some spooky stories about the site visit THIS post.

Here is my T-Day Ticket - a bit of  SlingShot Cold Brew from North Carolina and some Candy Bar ice cream.  I was a bit sleepy before we stopped here - the large jolt of caffeine and sugar woke me up!  Happy T-Day to my friends who meet up each Tuesday (or Monday night due to various time zones around the world) on Elizabeth's blog - Altered Book Lover.  I thought of all of you when I drank this very yummy drink.

Right near the ice cream place is this cool cement scupture.  Pepper Place is such a unique place in Birmingham.  I want to go back soon and visit all the shops.
For Elizabeth's T-Day Anniversary ATC Swap, I got mixed up on the rules and ended up sending ATCs to three people and had three people send me ATCs.  Worked out great for me as I loved receiving them and making them.

I received this great package from Mia (Craftartisa) - all the way from Greece and full of fun!  Love the background on the ATC and the encouraging words.

This is from Dagmar (Kokopelli Design) - all the way from Germany and with one of her gorgeous prints as well.  She drew the drinks - how cool and fun.
This lovely group of goodies came from CJ fromCJ and Ink.  She made a gorgeous envelope for her fun T-Day ATC and also made me a bookmark.  My daughter loved this bookmark, and asked me to make her one like it.  She has such faith in me!  I will be having to fake it somehow - LOL!
I have one last picture to share.  This is an ATC I made into a card this weekend when I cased Jan (Crafty Scorpio) who is one of our T-Day Gang and was also the Featured Stamper on Splitcoaststampers.com this weekend.  THIS is her card I cased. I used the same Tim Holtz Crazy Bird image she did, but I changed up the background, used a different sentiment, and added some tulle instead of hat on the bird.
Stay safe. I am trying.  Alabama has the lowest vaccine rate in the U.S.  Alabama makes the worst lists so I am so glad we are good at football!

Hugz,

Nancy

  1. I've heard of this Sloss furnace on one (or maybe more) ghost hunter type TV shows. I didn't realize they did tours. And you got some fantastic happy mail. How exciting. That seal is perfect for T day with that stack of cups. But your ice cream and cold brew must have not only given you an energy burst but given you an afternoon boost for certain. Hope you have a wonderful T day and August is going well. Hugs-Erika

  8. I want to visit Sloss Furnace. All that rust had me dancing for joy. I was SO impressed, not just with the rust, which I admit I LOVE, but also for the sculptures and artwork. I'm not afraid of ghosts, so that wouldn't matter at all.

Your coffee brew and ice cream look really yummy. It all sounds so good.

You got some beautiful ATCs. It's good you got confused and it's good the people you sent to reciprocated. Thanks for taking us to Sloss Furnace, for sharing your ATCs, and for your Slingshot coffee and ice cream with us for T this Tuesday. LOVE the art that you got along with all those ATCs, too.

  9. Love the seal balancing all those cups and saucers:) And the Sloss Furnace would be an interesting place to visit. We have very similar - the Bethlehem Steel with it's old buildings and furnaces in town- some of which have been renovated and some left as is for the history.
I would love to try that cold brew. And lucky you to have three marvelous trades and happy mail goodies! Happy T day!

  11. I'd never heard of the Sloss Furnace, but I googled it and it's a National Historic Landmark. Cool! It looks like a fascinating tour. I love that Hat Lady sculpture. Such fun mail you've been getting :)

I'm in Tennessee, and our vaccination rates are, shall we say disappointing :(

    Happy T Tuesday!

  12. What a lovely museum tour. I'd love to see that museum. So much history there. These people were pioneers in their own way.
The sculpture in the entry hall (seal) is great. I'm not into ghosts, so that wouldn't bother me at all.
That lady sculpture is brilliant! I love it! Thank you for showing that.
It was great that you got three ATCs. All of them beautiful plus some goodies too. I love the Crazy Bird ATC card you made. (Proper crazy bird with that green tulle!)
    Happy T-Day,
    Take care,
    Hugs,

  13. Love the seal balancing the teacups. The Sloss Furnace looks like an interesting place to tour. If it's haunted/spooky, I wonder if they do a night tour around Halloween? I'll skip the coffee but will gladly have the ice cream and waffle. Happy T Day

    1. CJ, they have a haunted house type thing at Halloween and it is supposed to be one of the scariest ones in America. I love to play around with thought of ghost but I can't handle scary haunted houses at all - lol!

    Lovely surprises in the post!

The Sea, Words of Courage, and Some Ink/Watercolor

Hello friends, Last week felt like a stormy sea of its own with my husband recovering from recent hip replacement surgery and several friends and family members facing life battles - my heart was caught in the waves. Computer issues and lack of sleep didn't help. Mark 4:39-41 reminded me: even when the winds rage, Jesus is in the boat. He speaks peace over the chaos. “Peace, be still.” I needed that reminder. Several lovely Creative Worship Stamps sets were used in the making of this watercolored and inked BAJ page: The Sea (the boat and verse), Scene Silhouettes: Tall Grasses, and Have Courage . This page was stamped, then watercolored with Daniel Smith Watercolors. I finished it off with some Tim Holtz Distress Ink (Vintage Photo, Mustard Seed, and Ground Expresso), plus a little bit of Silver Stickles. We have a lot of things going on in life and you time is precious, thank you for spending a little bit with me.  Hugz, Nancy

Flowers, a Flag, and Some Wise Words

Hello Crafty Friends! I love Halle's theme at **Art*Journal*Journey* this month: Botanicals. So many possibilities... I combined the botanical theme with some of the colors in ARTNUDGE#725A and came up with this Bible Art Journal page focusing on 1 Timothy 2:1-2. I also made a patriotic prayer card too. In these verses, Paul tells Timothy (and all of us) to pray for everyone but he especially calls out prayer for kings and leaders. He indicates that this type of prayer could lead us to a tranquil and quite life in all godliness and dignity. I think we can all agree that the world needs much prayer right now and it is an easy step we can take.   I experimented on this journal page. I usually cover any bible journal pages with gesso before painting on them, but I have issues with the gesso gumming up my Micron pens or unevenly taking color. This time I used Daniel Smith Ground Medium in Titanium White (I mixed it with 10 parts water). I loved it and will be using it in the fut...

Wise Words for Life's Storms

My first post as a Guest Designer for Creative Worship Stamps. This watercolor and ink card features one of my favorite CWS sentiments - Big God . I am so grateful He is there in storms and this stamp beautifully underscores His power. The main panel of this card is watercolor paper and was painted with Daniel Smith Watercolors and Liquid Ink (the white highlights in the rain drops). The words were stamped with black ink from Close to My Heart. Hugz, Nancy
